State of Sustainability Allstars: Meet Sami

10 Feb 2013 | Festival Team Post

Meet Sami: 11 years old; lives with his mum and dad near a windfarm outside Ballarat; loves animals, riding BMX and collecting rocks. He loves exploring the bush near his house, and makes jewellery with the feathers and seeds he finds, but when it’s fire season, he really worries about the animals.

Favourite animal? “I love animals – I’ve got heaps of friends in the bush, blue tongue lizards, the old Tawny Frogmouth owl that sits on our water tank, Robert the roo...”

Quote: “Did you know Victoria’s state animal the Leadbeater's possum is endangered. That sucks!”

Favourite after school activity: “I love riding on my secret bike track, it goes up near the windmills.”

Sami’s secret super power: Sami can do a backflip from an overhanging tree, and land in the river without a splash.

Sami wrote down all the events he wants to go to – here’s his list:

No Place Like Homelands ‘Mum often tells me about indigenous communities and their ways of life.’

Better Block Tour ‘‘These guys made a bike lane with paint, maybe I could do that too!

Eco-cubby exhibition ‘Wow, that’s so cool, I’m gonna build one myself’

The Gratitude Box ‘Dad has told me about typewriters - I wanna meet Mr Royal!’

Poo Power! the Movie ‘Haha, that’s funny, I wonder if they could use my dog’s poo too?’

Pans on fire ‘Wow!’

Reptiles Alive: Bushland & Revegetation ‘High five, reptiles alive!’

B.E.N. Biodiversity Reserves Tour ‘I wanna take my parents on a wildlife excursion, and it’s just down the road, can see all the local native birds and animals that live in my area”’
