Department of Climate Change & Energy Efficiency

A sustainable future is important for all Australians.

The Australian Government is committed to better living standards, better health, ongoing prosperity and the protection of our unique environment. The Clean Energy Future package is designed to help Australia make the transition to a low carbon economy and is built on four pillars:

A Carbon Price: Australia’s biggest polluters now pay for every tonne of carbon pollution they emit. This provides an incentive to reduce their carbon pollution and to invest in new, cleaner technology and energy. Money raised from the carbon price is being used to drive further investment in clean technologies and assist households and business in their transition to a low carbon economy.

Renewable Energy: Australia has an abundance of solar, wind, wave and other clean energy sources. The Clean Energy Finance Corporation will drive $10 billion worth of innovation in clean energy technologies.

Land Use: reducing carbon pollution and increasing the amount of carbon stored on the land can improve productivity, protect the environment, and increase resilience to climate change. Programs like the Carbon Farming Initiative are part of the Clean Energy Future package to help make this transition.

Energy Efficiency: conserving energy use, avoiding waste and working smarter – helps to reduce emissions and can save households and businesses money. That’s why grant programs such as the $300 million Low Carbon Communities Program and the $1.2 billion Clean Technology Investment Program are being rolled out by the Government.
